When Michael Jackson passed away on June 25, 2009, the artist was in the middle of preparing for his comeback tour. Millions of fans mourned not only the loss of the pop icon, but they also mourned over the concerts Jackson didn't live to perform. The Michael Jackson "This Is It" documentary gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at what Michael Jackson was preparing to show the world.
On March 5, 2009, thousands of fans and hundreds of journalists gathered at the O2 Arena in London for a press conference Michael Jackson was holding. Upon taking the podium, the King of Pop stated "I just wanted to say that these will be my final show performances in London. When I say this is it, it really means this is it". Jackson went on to describe the concerts as his "final curtain call". Organizers of the concerts promised an explosive, dramatic, state-of-the-art show. Jackson originally planned on 10 shows, but the demand for tickets prompted the number of shows to grow to 50. The concerts were to begin on July 8, 2009, but sadly Jackson died 18 days before the opening show.
The Michael Jackson "This Is It" documentary is a unique piece of work, as it captures Michael Jackson on film one last time. Following Jackson’s death, AEG Live, the promoters of the concerts, announced it would theatrically release "This Is It” as a documentary. Fans will get an inside look at as Michael Jackson rehearses for his "This Is It" concerts. To prepare for the grueling concerts, Michael Jackson worked with Lou Ferrigno to get in shape, and worked with famed choreographer Kenny Ortega for dance moves. Jackson called upon designed Christian Audigier to design his costumes for the shows. AEG Live recorded Jackson's rehearsals in high definition video with surround sound. The quick turnaround of the Michael Jackson “This Is It" documentary is rare, and fans worldwide can witness rehearsals, behind the scenes footage, and interviews with Jackson and those who worked with him.

The trailer for the Michael Jackson "This Is It" documentary debuted at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 13, 2009. Michael's sister Janet opened the show with a tribute to the fallen icon, and his father, Joe and brother Jermaine were in the audience to witness the premier of the trailer. The documentary captures Jackson doing what he loved to do-singing and performing-one last time. The documentary will be roughly 80 minutes long and will open simultaneously nationwide on October 30, 2009. As fans gather to see the movie, they will witness history as films rarely have simultaneous openings. Tickets sales are expected to make history by shattering box office records and 90% of the ticket sales will benefit the estate of Michael Jackson.
